7/18/14 Redwoods and Rascal

All it takes is a bunch of redwoods...

An email exchange with Redwood Harley Davidson had us booked for a 2:30 appointment for 15,000 mile service and a new tire.  Being 140 miles away, we packed up as soon as the confirmation was made.

Continuing up Route 1, the Pacific gave us our last thrills. Blue sky slitting through the horizon colored the ever-changing surface of the ocean a deep teal. Off the water, 101 took us back through the mountainous twists and turns that had thrilled us on our way down. Through redwood preserves, we lived our motto that you can't ride a good road too many times.

The Avenue of the Giants seduced us with its wealth of wonderful ancients and their intoxicating perfume. The quicker option was to take the freeway, but we needed to say goodbye to the redwoods. Their burled bark and their solid lineal trunks reaching hundreds of feet toward the sky again enchanted us. A picnic stop in a particularly alluring and seductive grove took us to another place in time, so much so that we lingered too long.

We were never going to make our appointment in Eureka on time! Reluctantly leaving the Giants, we jumped on the highway and sped toward Eureka. As we ran 101, we again passed countless lumber trucks, hauling raw redwoods to the yards in the city. Shaggy with bark, they will soon be processed into floors, benches and fences. Thankful for the protection of our ancient friends, we hit Eureka at about 3:00.

Rascal is spending the night at Redwood Harley Davidson because she was tardy. Too many roads, too many redwoods. Without wheels, we are captives in this busy city. As trucks roar by and sirens wail, we think back on our wonderful time together in the Enchanted Forest ....and know that we wouldn't have changed a thing about this day.
